I would recommend you listen to this:

And just maybe St. John, for all his holiness and wisdom, was also just a bit of self-righteous, puritan, prude. Not every one is called to live monastically, but he seemed to preach that. He scolded with a stinging and bitter tongue, and unsurprisingly was scalded in return by a harsh, venomous decree.
